Our Cattle
Over the years, we’ve built a herd with a thoughtful blend of Angus, Hereford, and Limousin genetics. By combining the strengths of these breeds, we’re able to raise cattle that are gentle to work with, efficient on feed, and consistently deliver high-quality, flavorful beef.
Calving takes place right here on the farm in our warm, well-bedded barn. New calves are closely monitored to ensure they get a healthy start before joining the rest of the herd on the rolling pastures of the Iowa River Valley. Once weaned, our cattle enjoy a diverse diet of grasses, legumes, hay, silage, and grains including spent grain from local breweries. It’s a sustainable, nutrient-rich way to support healthy growth.
We believe in practical, thoughtful animal care. We minimize medications when we can, invest heavily in prevention, and always prioritize the well-being of the herd. If an animal does need treatment, we strictly follow all withdrawal times to ensure our animals (and the beef we provide) remain safe and wholesome.
If you ever have questions about our cattle or how they’re raised, we’re always happy to talk.
Our Pigs
Our heritage pork comes from a carefully selected blend of Berkshire and Duroc genetics — two breeds long known for exceptional eating quality. Berkshire pork is celebrated for its exceptional marbling, tenderness, and rich flavor. Crossing it with Duroc adds depth, durability, and consistency, allowing us to raise pigs that deliver incredible eating quality while thriving in a natural farm environment.
All of our hogs are born right here on the farm, where we can give them a healthy start and watch them grow from day one. Once they’re old enough, they spend their days rooting, exploring, and expressing their natural behaviors — things that not only keep them healthy but also contribute to the distinctive flavor and texture of heritage pork.
Our pigs enjoy a diverse, nutrient-rich diet that reflects the abundance of our community. Along with grains, they’re fed kitchen scraps, produce from our garden, spent grain from local breweries, and surplus crops from nearby farms, including sweet corn, pumpkins, and whatever else the growing season provides. It’s a sustainable way to reduce waste while giving our hogs the variety they love.
We take a practical, thoughtful approach to animal care. We focus on prevention, minimize medications when appropriate, and always put the well-being of our animals first. When treatment is necessary, we follow all withdrawal times to ensure our animals get better as fast as possible and our pork remains safe and wholesome.
If you ever have questions about our pigs, their diet, or how we raise our heritage pork, we’re always happy to talk.
Our Birds
If you stop by the farm you will likely notice the wide range of birds we keep. We’ve developed a diverse and hard-working flock that plays an important role across the farm. Our laying birds include a mix of chicken and duck breeds, each chosen for reliable production and the rich, flavorful eggs they provide. They’re joined by geese and guineas, who serve as excellent guardians, keeping a sharp eye out for predators and sounding the alarm when something seems out of place. Together, they make a lively, productive community.
For meat birds, we raise chickens in mobile “chicken tractors” that are moved regularly to fresh grass. This system allows them to enjoy sunshine, forage, insects, and clean ground while staying protected from predators. The result is healthier birds and meat with exceptional texture and flavor that reflects their natural diet and outdoor environment.
All of our poultry is raised and processed right here on the farm. Handling everything ourselves allows us to maintain the highest standards of care, cleanliness, and respect from start to finish. We know exactly how each bird was raised because we were there every step of the way.
If you have questions about our flock, how our birds are raised, or our on-farm processing, we’re always happy to share more.
